Situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers lies one of the oldest of the European cities and one of its greenest capitals. Being in the centre of the Balkans, Belgrade has withstood more battles than any other capital and holds the record in the number of times that it got leveled to the ground with more than forty times trough its entire history. The turbulent and rich history of Belgrade is visible on/at every step. One may say that Belgrade is a living example of architecture of the past two centuries.

Terazije square, the Belgrade's designated center. Terazije in Turkish means scale, being the highest point in Belgrade in the period of Turkish occupancy, with water basins from which water was distributed to parts of Belgrade. Square was completely built after liberation from Turkish rule, beginning from midd. Of 19th century. Old Royal Palace, the Royal Palace of the Obrenović dynasty of Serbia, presently housing the City Assembly of Belgrade, was built between 1882 and 1884.
