Roman Heritage in Serbia

Meet the Emperors of the Byzantine Empire

Novi Sad - a city with a history just over 300 years long, lies in the shadow of the Petrovaradin Fortress – the Gibraltar of the Danube. It is mentioned for the first time in 1694, just two years after construction on the Petrovaradin Fortress began. The first fortress on the Petrovaradin rock was built by the Romans.

In Roman times, in the 1st century AD, between Petrovaradin and town today called Sremska Kamenica, there was a fortress Cusum. At the time of the Byzantine Empire in the same place there was a fortress Petricon. In the 8th century, today's Petrovaradin was in Franacka state, and from 9 century it was a part of the state of medieval Hungary. The Turks occupied the fort in the year 1526. Austria in 1692nd starts construction of the new fortification, now known as Petrovaradin fortress.

Sremski Karlovci - a baroque town with about 10000 people, on the banks of Danube under Fruska Gora mountain. Cultural and spiritual centre of the Serbs during Austro-Hungarian rule. Sremska Mitrovica - (Roman Sirmium) It was one of the most important towns of the Roman Empire in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Today it is an archaeological site of international significance. It was designated one of the capitals of the Empire in 294 AD and the significance of Sirmium for the entire Empire can be seen in the archaeological remains. Imperial Palace and Roman circus are discovered first at the archaeological research of Sirmium. There are also "Licinius terme" granary (horreum), commercial and craft districts. Luxury villas and multi-story apartment buildings, called “insulae” (where poor people lived) were found after. The city was protected by strong walls, and supplied with water via aqueduct from a spring creek on Fruska Gora Mountain.
Imperium Romanum

Sirmium was also the centre of the Roman province of Pannonia and a place of early Christian martyrdom. At the end of the 4th century Sirmium was destroyed by pagan tribes and abandoned. Beneath all its modern - day streets and squares, Sremska Mitrovica conceals all the grandeur and significance of Roman Sirmium.

Kalemegdan park, the most beautiful and biggest park in Belgrade, which is also the most important cultural and historical complex, in which the Belgrade Fortress stands high above the Sava and Danube confluence. The name Kalemegdan applies only to the spacious plateau surrounding the Fortress, which was turned into a park in the eighties of the XIX century. First mention of the city is when it was founded in the 3rd century BC as "Singidunum” by the Celtic tribe. During this amaizing tour, you will also see Viminacium. It was a major city (provincial capital) and military camp of the Roman province of Moesia (today's Serbia). The city dates back to the 1st century AD, and is believed that it had 40.000 habitants, and was one of the biggest cities of that time. It lies on the Roman road Via Militaris.
