Topola and Oplenac mausoleum

Topola - the place where Karadjordje, a Serbian revolutionary, was chosen as the leader of the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire in 1804. The town was established in 1781, by Vožd Karadjordje, on the right of the Kamenica river. The town was destroyed during the First Serbian Uprising. The renovation began in 1805, by Karadjordje, when the town was renewed as a fortified city and made it a strategic settlement. With the successful revolts, Topola gains a political importance. The Vožd further expanded the town, from 1808 to 1813 he built large walls, towers, konaks, a school, a church and many other buildings. Topola became the centre of Revolutionary Serbia, where Karadjordje was seated.

Oplenac - St. George′s Church – the Mausoleum of the Serbian Royal Family. Located on top of the Hill Oplenac in town of Topola. The Foundation in Oplenac is named after King Peter I. Apart from the two tombs inside the church (Karadjordje’s in the southern and King Peter I in the northern apse), there are 20 other members of the Dynasty whose eternal place of rest is in this Mausoleum. Six generations of the Karadjordjevic family have been buried in this church.

After visit to the mausoleum, we will have lunch in the ethno house in village Orasac, where I Serbian Uprising begin (option). After lunch drive back to Belgrade. End of the program.
